…last updated January 14, 2010 – I’ve watched a few movies – I just have a hard time keeping up this page with comments. I could likely watch all these over again at this point… ha!
The Magdalene Sisters – This was an intense film. Made me cry. I like movies based on true stories, but this was difficult. I’m glad I watched this, even though it was hard. Like the movie Precious, this was a section of life depicting a history that some women have had to endure at no fault of their own. Thank goodness this craziness is over now. I recommend it, especially to give voice to and honor the women who have lived this experience.
Pirate Radio – If you like Rock and Roll & the crazy time that surrounded its inception – in London – AND you enjoy Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s acting, then you will be highly entertained. A very good tale.
The Blind Side – I like movies based on a true story. I think most everyone would enjoy this movie. Sandra Bullock won her first Oscar for her role in this film. Its about football in the south so there are a lot of interesting moments.
Precious – Based on a combinations of many lives from the book “Push”. Watch the special features, maybe even before the movie?
Quote from the author of “Push”:
“What is creativity? The ability to see what’s not there.”
And ultimately, as Tyler Perry says,
“This movie is about hope.”
Joyeux Noël – Based on a true story. World War I movie about the Germans, French and Scottish trying to make peace on Christmas Eve.
Botany of Desire – Michael Pollan wrote a book of the same name. This is a beautiful documentary about tulips, potatoes, marijuana and apples and how we have perhaps unwittingly put ourselves in peril just by our desires.
Julie & Julia – This movie makes you want to eat. The Blue-ray version has cooking lessons … the egg recipe is divine. I liked the movie and the book. Meryl Streep as Julia. Wow.
Departures – Beautiful movie about a man losing his job as a cellist in the symphony, then accepting a job preparing the dead for funerals. Subtitled.
Adam – Nice story about a man with Asperger’s Syndrome and his relationships
Adoration – An odd, but worth watching movie dealing with racism. A young man makes up a story that builds unbelievably on the web. The story comes together well by the end. Written and directed by Atom Egoyan.
